If you are expecting a laptop for gaming or other heavy tasks then you should consider constructing a desktop rather than buying laptops. Desktops are more upgradable in comparison to laptops. Laptops should be used for general purposes like presentation, watching movies, programming, and other “work” related tasks which don’t require heavy computing power. Unlike gaming and 3D rendering, which require powerful processors/Graphics cards, their respective users prefer desktops over laptops.

What is the average laptop lifespan?
I won’t suggest some fixed value like 3-5 years. It completely depends on your requirements and needs. Until your computer does what you need it to do, then you shouldn’t buy a new laptop. Instead, you should optimize your computer by upgrading it using new RAM, SSD, etc. But recommended computer replacement cycle is 3-5 years if you run a company.
When is a laptop considered old?
Every new technology becomes old within a year if you understand it technically. Because like every month there is a new technology in the market that has the potential to replace what is considered new today.
When your laptop doesn’t do what you bought it for then you can consider it old. If it just hangs or has become slow then you should just upgrade it instead of replacing it so that it will give you like 1-2 years more before replacing.

If you ask me laptop doesn’t have a lifespan of more than 5-7 years at maximum. But if you have to build a desktop then you can use it for 10+ years. Some people even used their desktop for up to 14 years with some upgrades.

From my experience, Lenovo, HP, Asus laptops are durable. Most laptops have extra ram slots for upgrading later. So when you buy a new laptop make sure it has two RAM slots which will help you to upgrade your laptop later. This will increase the lifespan of your laptop.
Which computer has longest lifespan, laptop or desktop?
As I mentioned earlier, desktops are much more upgradable than laptops so if you can assemble a desktop then definitely desktop has a longer lifespan than laptops. It is obvious that if you have a 4K monitor and you want to upgrade it to an 8K monitor you just have to replace the monitor in the case of desktop. But if you are using a laptop then you are dependent on the company to provide a display of 8K or you have to buy a new laptop.
